Mobile Marketing is the next great frontier. It is five times the size of the Internet and is no more then three feet away from a present, or potential customer twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The first form of mobile marketing was the use of SMS (Short Message Service), i.e. text messaging. However this form of mobile marketing is still very cost restrictive to enter. However the use of SMS as the only means of reaching mobile users is quickly fading do to smart phones and feature phones. The main feature is that is installed on almost all phones today is internet access. Almost all phones contain some sort of browser. It is this growing popularity of cell phones equipped with internet access that allows us to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity mobile marketing has to offer. Presently there are 1.5 billion internet users and it is estimated that cell phone users will hit 5 billion worldwide this year[i].

Pew research has also found that 53% percent of Americans who use their phones to go online do so at least once per day.

Jill Dvorak, senior consultant on mobile commerce at FitForCommerce stated on the successes of mobile couponing, “The high redemption rate is due to a very engaged consumer, potential geolocated relevant messages and a high brand affinity or motivation to buy,… Also, mobile coupons help protect retailers, since security is easier to manage as they are harder to share between users.”
Where can the mobile marketing help you, the business owner or marketer?
Marketers could take advantage of CPA networks and use the mobile advertising arena as the
- Apparel and accessories. They can create a opt-in database of potential customers and present customers and inform them on special deals and create a loyalty program. Send them alerts on a new line of clothing coming in. A high quality database system can merge present customers sales details and match up SMS alerts with specific items for sale. It could also serve as an inventory tool.
- Arts and entertainment. Movie theaters could send out SMS alerts on new movie releases, concerts, book signings, etc… SMS Alerts could also include links to movie trailers, or a song trailer and a simple link to download the complete song. Specials could also be included in SMS messages to get a bigger crowd on the off days. We all know about ringtones and how popular they are.
- Automotive. SMS alerts would work great for sales specials, or discounts on services How about sending an alert for an annual oil change?
- Education. Education is a perfect area to utilize SMS text messaging, class cancelations, upcoming tests, etc… You are dealing with a much younger crowd here and they are much more text savvy.
